Cozy Up Your Home: A New Winter Decorating Series

Hello friends! I’m thrilled to introduce a new series that will run for the next two to three months, all about embracing coziness as we prepare our homes for the winter season. Each Saturday, I’ll share creative winter decorating ideas to help bring warmth and comfort to your spaces. Whether you already have some of these elements in your home or are looking for fresh inspiration, there’s sure to be something for everyone. To kick things off, today’s spotlight is on pairing wood elements with dark paint for a rich, inviting look. Take a look!

First on the list is a stunningly simple kitchen featuring wood floors, a vintage wooden kitchen island, and a stove hood framed with a wooden surround. The natural warmth of the wood elements already sets a cozy tone, but the rich, deep plum paint elevates the space to an entirely new level of charm and sophistication.

Do you have any natural wooden architectural elements in your home like ceiling beams, wood board and batten, or wainscoting? Leave it bare or stained, and paint the surrounding walls or spaces in a dark paint color. Don’t be afraid of the room being too dark, especially if you have large windows that allow for lots of natural light. The result is pleasing drama and warmth.

If you’re a bit shy when it comes to dark finishes for winter decorating, try a paint color that has medium intensity, like Ryegrass from Sherwin Williams that provides the perfect accent for the natural wood in this cozy bedroom.

Here’s a gorgeous two-toned kitchen that pairs upper traditional wood cabinets with lower cabinets in dark gray. Cream-colored walls and light marble countertops keep the room from looking too heavy.

If you’re one of those lucky people with natural wood trim in your house, consider a splash of navy blue on the walls. This room has the perfect cozy vibe for curling up with a good book or grabbing a bowl of popcorn and watching your favorite movie. It’s all about that hygge vibe!

If you don’t have any natural wood trim or architectural elements in your home, never fear. You can still incorporate wood and dark paint into your home by pairing wood furniture with dark walls. This dining room uses the same color of paint on both the trim and walls (which means you don’t have to tape off trim before painting).

I think most people probably have a white or off-white upstairs hallway without a lot of adornment, other than pictures. Here, a wood-paneled hall gets a touch of dark stain on the staircase banister and window trim. There’s no need for wall art due to the rich beauty of the wood. Expansive windows keep the space from feeling too cave-like.

Here’s another beautiful room with natural wood trim and a deep, dark blue paint on the walls for winter decorating. The Chesterfield sofa matches the trim work and blends in, rather than standing out, making the room feel larger.

If you’re not too sure about darker paint options, try something just a touch lighter on a smaller surface area. This stunning fireplace features warm red paired with the warm wood of the ceiling. Despite the light walls, you still get a warm, cozy ambiance.

  1. It is always good to have an open mind to new, different styles, etc.
But those dark interiors and moody colors are not for me, lol. My rooms are small, ceilings low, and would feel claustrophobic if painted dark. My walls are all white and rugs and furniture are colorful, year-round.
I am looking forward to your new series!

  2. Happy Holidays, Jennifer,
These are too dark and dreary for my taste. Let’s see more bright color interiors!

  3. I love this new series. I live in Montana where there’s a lot of beautiful sunny days in the winter months but it is sooooo cold. Dark colors are cozy, especially when paired with great wood textures, blankets and candles. Thanks for sharing.
